The Ultimate Guide to Backpacking in Hong Kong 2025

Which Season and Activity is the Best for Backpacking?

It depends on the activities you are planning to do while backpacking, and it depends on your backpacking style. It would be hell if you are planning for an expedition trip with extensive hiking in summer, while it would be heaven if you are planning for a grill and chill trip in a forest during Autumn.

ACTIVITIES

You can plan various activities within the scope of country parks. Hiking from one spot to another, and camp in between is great, but wouldn’t it be awesome if you could see more and do more during your backpacking trip? Personally, I do recommend some activities in different seasons during your backpacking trips, and a few examples are listed below:

Summer Time

Snorkeling

Intrigued? While it may not be a typical feature of backpacking trips in many parts of the world, snorkeling is a common and highly recommended activity in Hong Kong. In fact, for some, snorkeling is not just an addition to the trip, but the highlight of the entire backpacking adventure.

Hong Kong is home to 7 Marine Parks, teeming with a rich diversity of marine life. These parks house 84 species of reef-building corals and nearly 1000 fish species from the South-China Sea, offering a vibrant underwater spectacle for snorkelers. Among these, Double Haven Marine Park stands out as the top choice for its exceptional beauty and biodiversity. So, when planning your backpacking trip in Hong Kong, consider adding a snorkeling adventure to your itinerary for an unforgettable experience!

Beach

For those of you who are sun worshippers and beach enthusiasts, Hong Kong is a veritable paradise! With over 100 beaches dotting the landscape, many of which are nestled in remote islands, you’re spoilt for choice. While it’s impossible to list all the stunning beaches that Hong Kong has to offer, I’d like to highlight a couple of personal favorites.

Pak Lap Wan in Sai Kung is a top pick. This secluded beach is known for its tranquil beauty and crystal-clear waters, making it a perfect spot for a relaxing day out.

Another recommendation is Pui O Beach on Lantau Island. This beach is renowned for its scenic beauty and diverse wildlife, offering a unique beach experience.

So, whether you’re planning a day of sunbathing, a beach picnic, or a snorkeling adventure, these beaches are fantastic locations to include in your backpacking itinerary. Happy beach hopping!

Kayaking

You might be under the impression that kayaking would require you to lug around a lot of gear, right? Well, you’re in for a pleasant surprise! Hong Kong is well-equipped with kayaking facilities at nearly every major kayaking spot. These facilities or stores are primarily operated by local villagers, offering a unique, community-driven experience.

For a fixed fee, these facilities provide you with all the necessary equipment, including a life vest, kayak, and paddle. So, all the heavy lifting is taken care of! All you need to bring along is a waterproof bag for your personal belongings. This makes kayaking a hassle-free and accessible activity to include in your backpacking adventure in Hong Kong. Happy kayaking!

All Year Round

Fishing

Fishing is a personal favorite activity of mine during backpacking trips. The thrill of the catch and the satisfaction of cooking your own catch truly elevates the entire experience. Fishing is not just an activity, but a challenge that requires patience and skill, offering a primal sense of hunting for your own sustenance.

Hong Kong, with its extensive coastline stretching over 450km and diverse microhabitats, provides endless opportunities for fishing. The variety of marine life in these waters adds to the excitement and unpredictability of the activity.

Adding another layer of interest to your backpacking trip is the option to fish for freshwater species in most of the water reservoirs, all of which are conveniently located within country parks. This gives you even more flexibility when planning your backpacking route. From my personal experience, the freshwater fish residing in these reservoirs tend to be larger and stronger, making the “FISH ON” experience feel like a thrilling battle with a formidable opponent in a serene environment.

However, it’s important to note that fishing in these water reservoirs requires a Fishing License. Before 2021, there is a designated fishing period from September to March every year to avoid interfering with spawning activities. Starting from 21 April 2022, the reservoirs and irrigation reservoirs shown below will be open to public for fishing all year round. So, if you’re planning to include fishing in your backpacking adventure, make sure to plan accordingly and respect the local regulations. Happy fishing!

Rock Climbing

Outdoor rock climbing in Hong Kong offers an exhilarating way to connect with nature while enjoying spectacular scenery. Some of the top spots are located on Hong Kong Island and Lantau Island, which boasts some of the best coastal climbing areas. The views are simply breathtaking, combining challenging routes with the beauty of the sea. East Kowloon is another excellent area, featuring climbs that reward you with panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape. For a truly unique experience, Tung Lung Chau is known for its rugged coastal cliffs and distinctive rock formations, making it a favorite among seasoned climbers. Whether you’re seeking a peaceful climb with scenic views or a challenging ascent, outdoor rock climbing in Hong Kong has something to offer for every climber.

Sunrise / Sunset

Indeed, planning for sunrise and sunset may seem trivial given their daily occurrence, but I assure you, it’s a serious consideration for a fulfilling backpacking experience. The timing and quality of these natural spectacles can be influenced by several factors.

Firstly, the timing of sunrise and sunset varies with each season. Therefore, it’s important to keep your backpacking plan updated to align with these changes. You might need to adjust your schedule and allow extra buffer time to fully appreciate the best sunrise or sunset possible.

Secondly, the sun’s path changes throughout the year. This means that the view of the sunrise or sunset from your chosen campsites or spots can vary significantly depending on the time of year. Some locations may offer a spectacular view at one time of the year and a less impressive one at another.

So, while it may seem like a minor detail, planning for sunrise and sunset can greatly enhance your backpacking experience, providing unforgettable moments of natural beauty.
