Trip Brief:

Date: 2-3 Dec 2024
Length of Trip: Overnight
Recommended Activities: Winter Campfire, Reservoir Fishing, Short Hike, Gorge Walk

I traveled to Yuen Long and enjoyed a delicious brunch at this place. Afterward, I took the minibus Route 71 at Tai Hang Street to Ho Pui Village and hiked to the campsite. Once the tent was set up, I went straight to the reservoir fishing in the afternoon and had a late lunch next to the reservoir. On Day 2, after a hot and hearty breakfast, I went on a short but refreshing gorge walk in the morning. Returning to the campsite, I enjoyed a slow lunch before packing up and heading back, bringing an end to my unwinding 2-day trip.

Weather Forecast

During the day, the weather was warm and comfortable, with temperatures climbing high enough to feel quite hot on the second day. However, as soon as the sun set, it got pretty chilly, and the cool night air made us appreciate our cozy campfire even more.

The best part? The clear night sky was absolutely breathtaking. We woke up at 3am for some impromptu stargazing. Even though the campsite was surrounded by tall trees, there were no obstructions overhead, giving us a perfect view of the starry sky. It felt like we were looking through a giant monoscope, with countless stars twinkling brightly. The sheer number of stars and their brilliance made the experience unforgettable and really highlighted the beauty of the natural world.

The Trip

Day 1

Morning: I started my adventure by traveling to Yuen Long, where I enjoyed a delicious brunch. Yuen Long Town, is where all the action happens. It’s a lively spot full of traditional shops, modern malls, and local eateries that capture the town’s unique vibe. You can wander through fresh produce markets, sip coffee at trendy cafes, and soak up the local culture. Plus, it’s super easy to get around with public transport options nearby. The vibrant atmosphere of Yuen Long was the perfect way to kick off my trip.

Afternoon: After brunch, I took the minibus to Ho Pui Village and hiked to the campsite. Setting up my tent was quick and easy, and I went straight to reservoir fishing in the afternoon. The tranquility of the reservoir was a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of the morning. I had a late lunch next to the reservoir, savoring the peaceful surroundings and the simple joy of being in nature.

Late Lunch – Veggie Roll with Peanut Sauce

It is absolutely a healthy and delicious meal. We finished all the rice paper before the veggies ran out, there were some veggies left.

Fishing at Ho Pui Reservoir is a must-do for both locals and visitors. Surrounded by beautiful nature, it’s the perfect spot for a relaxing day of fishing. You’ll love the serenity of the water, the calming sounds of nature, and the thrill of catching some fish. Just make sure to check the fishing regulations and get a fishing license if needed. It’s an excellent way to unwind and enjoy the outdoors while immersing yourself in the natural beauty of the area.

Evening: As evening approached, it was time to gather around the campfire for dinner. The campfire’s warm glow was comforting against the chill of the winter air. I indulged in baked potatoes, shiitake mushrooms, jade melon, and sausages with yoghurt. Sharing stories and laughter under the starry sky, I felt a profound connection to nature and a deep sense of contentment.

Day 2

Morning: The next morning, I woke up to the crisp winter air and the promise of new adventures. For breakfast, I prepared a hearty meal of shin ramen with cabbage meatballs and kimchi. The warm, savory flavors were the perfect start to the day.

We had a bit of an issue with ants invading our food, even though we had it hanging on a post. Luckily, the ants couldn’t get into the food since everything was individually packed in ziplock bags. This experience really highlighted the importance of reinforcing the “leave no trace” principles to keep the campsite clean and safe for everyone. All campers must be mindful and responsible, ensuring that the campsite remains pristine and enjoyable for future visitors.

After breakfast, I set out on a short gorge walk. Starting at the Ho Pui Stream Entrance (JK98588122) and exiting at the Ho Pui Stream Exit (JK98818083), the walk was invigorating and provided stunning views of the natural beauty in the area. The sound of the flowing water and the sight of the gorge’s rugged terrain were mesmerizing.

Afternoon: Returning to the campsite, I had a slow lunch of prosciutto and salami on a cheese roll over the campfire. The simplicity of the meal was balanced by its rich flavors. After packing up my gear, I felt a mix of satisfaction and nostalgia as I hiked back to Ho Pui Village Office (JK98128155), concluding my unwinding 2-day adventure.
